French St. Louis Cologne Bottles

G2509. Exceptional French St. Louis cranberry-red cased colorless wheel-cut Chair-cane pattern pair of leaded glass colognes with pattern-cut air-trap stoppers.

Each cologne bottle and stopper is blown from colorless leaded glass which is cased with a thin layer of heat-sensitive cranberry-red colored glass. The cranberry-red outer layer is pierced by cutting, circumscribing the cylindrical walls of the bottle with a double-mitered diamond-netted blocked field of cranberry-red pyramidal octagons, triple step-cutting low rounded shoulders, faceting a short flanged cylindrical neck with eight closely spaced flutes, and finishing the bottom with a 24-point rayed star. Honed for the bottleneck, the stopper has an inverted baluster-shaped finial with a compressed ovate top which is hollowed by a conforming air-pocket and circumscribed by a double-mitered band of cranberry-red pyramidal octagons, drawn from a waisted neck that is faceted by five closely spaced flutes; and finished with a 16-point rayed star adorning the crown.

Attributed to Compagnie des Cristalleries de Saint Louis in Saint-Louis-lés-Bitche, Lorraine, France; dating after 1880. The bottom surface of each bottle retains the original small oval yellowed paper label printed in black with an oval containing the manufacturer name, “St. Louis” arching above the picture of a glass carafe seated in an underplate. Excellent clarity and superior cutting using stone-wheels and a careful acid-polish. Good condition. Each bottle with stopper is 6.5" tall and 2.5" diameter. $325.00 each. Pair only.
