American Roll Top Desk

American roll-top desk, crafted in quarter-sawn oak, having a paneled case with a finished back, having an upper case with a molded top above a serpentine-shaped slatted tambour lid enclosing a generous writing surface flanked by mail-slots and letter racks on either side, centering a large set of cubby-holes and drawers, supported on a twin pedestal base comprised of a long narrow molded drawer above a knee-hole recess, flanked by two cases each fitted with molded drawers stacked below a pull-out writing tablet, molded above a rounded base-board.
   The drawers are each mounted with richly carved pulls each ornamented with an anthemion inverted between two abstracted leaves. The long narrow middle drawer is mounted with two pulls, flanked in the twin pedestals by short narrow drawers each mounted with a single pull. The pedestal on the left is fitted with four evenly sized drawers. The pedestal on the right is fitted with two short drawers above a deep "double" drawer.
   The set of cubby-holes and drawers in the writing case are comprised of two short narrow drawers dividing a bank of ten short rectangular file drawers, above two tall narrow file-compartments centering a row of two short rounded drawers over three narrow slots overlying a valenced recess fitted with two pencil trays and a letter rack, which, in turn, is flanked on the left by four evenly sized stacked long drawers and on the right by three narrow drawers stacked below a bank of four file slots beside a stack of two small file drawers. As a finishing touch, the drawers are fitted with turned oak knobs, and the file drawers are fitted with brass name-slots.
   Dating is from the late 19th century to the early 20th Century. Disassembles for moving. Panel-and-rail joinery. Poplar secondary wood. Good overall condition with an older mellow honey-golden finish. The lock for the tambour lid is missing, as is one brass name-slot and two of the knobs from the small file drawers in the writing cabinet. Measures 50" tall, 60" wide and 33.5" deep. $1,895.00
