American Rainaud Double-Light Electric Table Lamp

American Rainaud Double-Light Electric Table Lamp

L178. American Rainaud double-light electric table lamp, having a domed shade fitted with seven caramel-slag glass panels in a dark-brown painted cast-metal frame accented with shades of green, supported by a columnar cast metal base painted to match the shade.

The caramel-slag glass panels in the shade are marbleized fiery opalescent white and “caramel” colored, fitted behind and conforming to open-work metal trapezoidal floral-molded frames, united by a cap-ring molded with egg-and-dart above pointed lappets. The metal frames are each divided by bars molded with scale, suggesting stalks, each terminating with a large yellow-green painted serrate palmate leaf that is anchored upon the stippled border ring for the shade. In turn, the palmate leaf centers two vining issues scrolling over the glass on either side, each branching with slender elongated oval dark-green painted leaves, accompanied by two pedicels with yellow-green flowers, including a short stemmed upturned poppy-type flower and a longer stemmed poppy-type bud terminating on the border ring. Completing the design, two side-symmetric “whip-lashed” leaf-forms each scrolling back upon itself are nested at the top of the glass panel, and seven small oval medallions each adorned with a double fleur-de-lis are embossed on the border ring respectively centered below the glass panels.

The metal lamp-base has a hollow molded floral-molded columnar form, having a baluster-shaped shaft with an ogee-shaped cap circumscribed by eight bellflowers, and embossed with a wide band of narrow rounded ribs circumscribing the lower walls; supported by a spooled upon a round ogee-molded foot that is molded with 24 radiating narrow pointed-oval veined leaves terminating in an aligned chain of trefoil-shaped yellow-green painted leaves nested with small bellflowers above a narrow plinth.

The electrification of the lamp uses a cord which enters the plinth of the columnar base, traveling through the shaft, continuing into a round rod extension and terminating at a wire-cup which anchors two electric sockets. The wire-cup is covered by an everted acanthus floriform, secured by a pineapple-molded oviform finial threaded upon a projecting screw. In turn, the floriform cover is molded with a flanged ogee-molded petal-cup which is designed to receive the lamp-shade and detailed with four lappets radiating between the same number of sepals, inverted from a small conical sectioned stem bounded by a rounded ring of lappets.

Attributed to H. E. Rainaud Company in Meriden, Connecticut, c. 1916-1930. The bottom surface of the lamp-base is molded with the manufacturer name, “Rainaud,” accompanied by the number “20” probably indicating the design/shape number. Good overall condition with moderate paint wear on the acanthus-floriform cap. Measures 23" tall with a shade that is 7" tall and 16" diameter. $975.00
